November at Ivy Montessori is a time for both quiet reflection and joyful exploration. We’ll delve into stories like The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton, exploring themes of change and resilience. Our playlist will feature the calming melodies of Beethoven, encouraging focus and creativity. We’ll honour Remembrance Day by creating poppies and discussing the importance of peace. Join us this November for a month of learning and remembrance.
With winter fast approaching, it’s time to bring out the warmer clothing. At Ivy, we encourage mittens for our younger children rather than gloves.
Gloves have so many little fingers that need to be put in correctly. For a younger child who does not have the motor coordination to successfully put these on, it is best to use mittens. Success isn’t measured in the larger achievement but how a child can grow to develop through smaller goals. Mittens, with only one finger slot, are much easier for a younger child (under 3) to successfully put on. The satisfaction of putting on a mitten independently can lead to increased confidence and self-determination. The challenge increases as they get older with the introduction of gloves.
The same principle can be applied to Neck warmers vs Scarves: neckwarmers, like hats can fit snugly over ones head and will not get tangled like a long scarf. A balaclava is also a wonderful piece of clothing that combines both items!
